49th Street & Caldwell Street Sewer Separation Project

49th Street and Caldwell Street Sewer Separation (RNC) Project*

The 49th and Caldwell Area Sewer Separation Project was a Renovation of Combined Sewer (RNC) Project, denoted as OPW 52193, and was located in the Saddle Creek Basin generally bounded on the north by Grant Street; on the east by 48th Street; on the south by Cuming Street; and on the west by 53rd Street. The project area had been served primarily by combined sewers, ranging in size from 8-inch up to 84-inch in diameter. The objective of the project was to design and construct improvements to cost effectively eliminate or minimize localized rain induced sewer backups of the combined sewer system in the 49th and Caldwell Service Area.

The designed improvements consisted predominately of new storm sewer piping and inlets throughout the project area. A majority of the combined sewers within the project area were converted into sanitary service.

To facilitate utility relocation work and minimize public disruption to the area, the project was segregated into three construction phases, denoted as Phase 1, 2 and 3. Utility relocation took place prior to project related construction work and followed the same phasing approach.

*RNC refers to Sewer Renovations Projects that separate sewers for basement backup relief or to minimize street flooding, but don't provide water quality/CSO benefits and are not part of the Long Term Control Plan.
